Jean-Bernard Minster was Systemwide Director of IGPP (1994-2004). He served as chair of the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate; as member, then chair ,of the UCSD committee on Planning and Budget (twice); and as member, then chair of the UC systemwide Committee on Planning and Budget (twice).

He served as member of the Board of the Southern California Earthquake Center for 17 years, and serves a SCEC Science Director for a two-year term. He was a member of the ICESat science team. Professor Minster has held positions in industry and has been a consultant and reviewer for numerous companies. He was the Nordberg Lecturer at NASA/GSFC in 1996 and was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in 1990, and elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2013.

He received the NASA public Service Medal in 2003. He has served as founding chair of the Earth and Space Science Informatics focus group of the American Geophysical Union.

Dr. Minster has chaired various National Research Council committees, including the Committee on Geophysical and Environmental Data, and the Committee on Geodesy. and has served on boards and committees related to solid earth geophysics, including the Board on Earth Sciences and Resources.

He recently participated in activities of the NRC Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI). He chaired the NRC study on Scientific Accomplishments of Earth Observations from Space, and the NRC study on Precise Geodetic infrastructure, and served on the Earth Science subcommittee, and on the Technology subcommittee of the NASA Advisory Committee (NAC).

In recent years, Dr. Minster served on the International Council for Science (ICSU) ad hoc Scientific Committee on Information and Data (SCID) and on the ICSU Scientific Coordinating Committee on Information and Data (SCCID). He is currently finishing his second term as chair of the Scientific Committee of the ICSU World Data System (WDS). He participated in several ICSU CODATA science conferences, International Polar Year data forums, and in several associated working groups.

He serves on Interest groups and working groups of the international Research Data Alliance (RDA), focused on data publication, data repository certification, and international legal interoperability, and libraries for research data. He served as co-convenor of the 2011 first WDS science symposium “Global Data for Global Science” in Kyoto, Japan, and the 2014 first joint CODATA-WDS data science conference SciDataCon-2014, in New Delhi, India.
